Singapore International School, Mumbai

The Singapore Consulate at Mumbai called up inviting us to attend the launch ceremony of the Singapore International School located at Post Meera beyond Borivali in Mumbai. This is the first such school in India conforming to the Singapore education standards, with affiliation to the Ministry of Education of Singapore (and others).

You can visit the website of the school at “SIS Mumbai” .

I was surprised that the founders chose a location that far from the city of Mumbai. While space is a constraint in Mumbai for sure, people also wish to avoid commuting as much as possible. May be that is the reason why the school is promoting week-boarding perhaps.

The school seems to be having a lot of space – 15 acres – which is quite a luxury in this congested city. Most of the construction seems to have been completed, and the classes are starting this month. I met with about half a dozen folks from Singapore, including a couple from the local Singapore Consulate. We talked a lot about adjusting to the living conditions in Mumbai and how tough life is for the average person. The School is located on the National Highway 8 which is always choked with lorry traffic. I told them it took me 45 minutes to reach from Malad which is supposed to be couple of stations away on the Western Railway route. We estimated it would take about 2.5 hours to come to the School from South Mumbai !

Anyway, the School is a commendable effort by some Singaporeans to impact the local education scene. Given that the cost per year is in the range of USD 14,000 per child, it is clearly out of reach for most, if not all. I was thinking this same education quality is available for SGD 25 per quarter at a good Singapore school ! However, given the hype for international quality education in India currently, I am sure many wealthy parents with secondary school-going children, might consider this option of week-boarding their kids. Further SIS is in the process of getting the IB (International Baccalaureate) accreditation, which is strongly preferred by such parents.

We had an excellent lunch with a number of other parents, who had come down for the function. There were a couple of presentations with a guest of honour speech by a Singapore Member of Parliament. I would strongly suggest that Singaporeans de-emphasize their accent, because in general Indians did not seem to understand the very Singaporean English and the speed with which the presentations were delivered.

It was an interesting distraction to make this visit and interact with a few Singaporeans and local parents though.

Have a great Easter weekend !

Cheers

Thanks for your review on Sinapore International School, Mumbai. Infact, after learning about this school, I visited the campus and was amazed at the development. I travel very often to Singapore, and am not too sure if they have such good schools and amenities there. Besides all the activities like swimming, tennis, gym, they have huge sprawling lawns that are a feast to the eyes.
I met the Prinipal who is an Australian and very impressive, besides his team of other international teachers. I guess these guys mean serious business and have the ability to provide a truly international experience.

I think if you got the bucks, I am yet to come accross anything better than this in Mumbai !

    Dear Mr. Shrinivasan,
My daughter has just completed thr I.B. Diploma and applied to a few universities in Canada, U.S.A. and Singapore. She has got admission in all the universities in Canada and the U.S.A. with a good scholarship but is still awaiting the reply from the Singapore universities.
My second child has just finished the “O” level and waiting for the results in the first week of August.
If my daughter gets the scholarship and admission in any Singapore university we were considering sending my second child to Singapore to do the “A” levels.
I learnt about SIS Mumbai and went yo see it. I liked the infrastucture. I met a few of the staff. The Principal and the few teachers we meet were really professional warm amd helpful. If the school offers the child “A” level, I would rather educate him in SIS Mumbai in day boarding than send him to Singapore. I was told that only I..B. Diploma is offered. I was quite disappointd.I wish they do offer my child an “A” level at SIS this year.

It was interesting to know that Such international schools are mushrooming much in mumbai recently. However, this singapore internation school sounds different. I think since the director Mr.Nilesh has high potential to bring this school in a big way.. We can sure expect lot of changes happening, as it has just started. All the best to Singpore intenational. Sure the Mumabi parents should visit such schools and get an idea of what is happening in their own town rather than sending there kids overseas spending lot of money. Last but not the least .. While admiting their childrens in any international schools, the parents should also see how many Foregin staff such insititutions have.. This can be used as an assessign factor for any parents seeking admission in an international school. Mr.Vijay srinivasan, i saw your website and it was quite interesting that my fellow indian is doing a good job. I appreciate for all your contribution in this venture.

  20. A. Bhatkar says:

    Dear Author,
I did not receive invitation to your personal blog, neither do I know you in person.
I was searching for SIS on google, and bumped into your blog. I was happy to learn about Singapore Education being offered in Mumbai, though I was looking for SIS that is an acronym for something different.
While reading the comments on the article, I see that a number of people have applied for the job, and given their personal details like email ids, phone numbers and even currently drawn salary etc.
Their awareness on importance and secrecy of such personal information is questionable.
But as a blog writer, I request you not to publish such details, if you have a control on comments publishing, and of-course if you get some time from your busy schedule.
    Regards,
    A. Bhatkar
