Autocar Show 2012 Mumbai

I took my son to the Autocar Performance Show 2012 at Mumbai last weekend – he was excited as he is a car lover (more than me).

It took us more than 2 hours to walk around the huge place, there were lots of cars !

The hottest high-end booth belonged to Audi, in my opinion. We were allowed to enter the various booths and take photos. We could ask the car guys to open the engine and show it to us. The hottest mid-range booth belonged to Hyundai and Mahindra, again this is purely an opinion based on the interactions that I witnessed in various booths – I might have missed some booths for sure. Further, it was the peak time of the show at 6 PM.

While I was impressed with the Audi range, what captured my heart was the BMW booth. A bit subdued though – however the cars on display seem to have been chosen with the point that there got to be a difference with the other German marquee cars. Panamera was a delight to inspect. The 5-series was imposing in comparison to the 3-series (both latest models). There were many BMW guys in the booth, but no one was intrusive, unlike in the Audi booth.

We met with Lomborghini (!), Porsche and Ferrari……..and many other beautiful cars in this Show. There were companies which were eager to explain the technology and the specifications of their cars, such as Hyundai and Mahindra. There were the elitist brands which just sat there with no intervention from company folks, such as the Jaguar and Ferrari.

I was not impressed with the bike range though – I had expected to see a lot more pizzaaz with Harley Davidson, Hyosung, Yamaha, Honda, et al. But there were only few not so impressive ones on show.

Finally, we took a 4-wheel drive on Mahindra jeep in a specially laid out track, which was amazing. Mahindra seems to have perfected the jeep range very well. The grip on the wet, sandy and muddly tracks was phenomenal. The guy who drove the car explained what was happening and how the ride was different from a normal ride on one’s car – very interesting.

Overall, it was a good experience. I had seen the same show some 3 years ago, and the improvement was amazing – cars keep improving rapidly (I am reminded of the joke comparing cars and software, but that is for some other time !).
