Good wine from South Africa.
Of late, I have been discovering more and more good wines from South Africa at reasonable prices in Singapore. Of course Singapore prices are inflated, so the real competitive price of any wine need to be discovered online !
I got this wine recommended by a wine shopkeeper, and decided to try it out. I was not disappointed in the least.
This wine is from the Rhebokskloof Wine Estate located some 40 KMs from Cape Town in the beautiful Paarl Mountain range. The wine is ruby red in colour, and has a complexity which fascinates one’s senses. It is fruity on the palate with ripe tannins and a lingering dry finish – it was exactly as they have described !
This wine (and many other good wines from South Africa) is not easily available in Singapore – you have to go and search for it. But it is worth the search if it comes at a good price as well ! There is no shortage of good wines around SGD 25 onwards, and one is spoilt for choice during the search. I have personally developed a liking for Chilean and South African wines, not just because of the quality (comparable to the best) but also because of the fact that very good wines from these countries are 25% less expensive than those good ones from Australia and New Zealand.
The fact that the Australian Dollar has become 1:1 with the SGD does not seem to have had an impact on store prices – frankly, I thought it would be profiteering if the wine prices do not come down in SGD (by at least 10 to 15%). But like home prices, the wine prices stay where they are – stubbornly high, especially the ones from Australia.
So, no choice there – one should migrate to other regions’ good wines which are equally good and giving a run for the consumer’s money.
Enjoy your wines !
